The town of Kalamata, built on the ruins of the Homeric city of Pharae, traces its history back to 2,600 BC. Nestled between the mountain Taygetos and the Messinian Gulf, the town is known today for its charm and liveliness and its beautiful 4-km long shore, EU blue flag awarded. The figs, raisins, honey bars, olives and olive oil of Kalamata are world-renowned. Kalamata's historic course from a Mycenaean city to Byzantium, under the rule of the Franks, the Venetians and the Turks offers the visitor a wide variety of historical monuments and attractions. The convent of Saints Constantine and Helen, the Frankish Castle of Princess Isabeau, the Nunnery, the 10th century church of the Holy Apostles, the old mansions still standing in many parts of the town, the Benakion archeological Museum and the Folklore Museum should be included in every itinerary.
